Pastor Rich

Our pastor is moving on. I did a quick sketch of him as a show of respect and to say that he will be missed.

Larry in a Yellow Hat

This is the choir director at Central Lutheran Church in Dallas. His talent constantly amazes me. He has taken a guy like me, who doesn’t know anything about music, to a guy who is now well aware how much he doesn’t know about music.

This drawing was based on a photo taken during the dedication of my wife’s memorial garden and labyrinth.

Mary!

Sunday, April 16th, 2017

This painting is based on John 20:11-16, especially verse 16. It is dedicated to a high school classmate and good friend, Mike Minick, who died in 2014. He had given the canvas to me and after his death I decided to do a painting with a religious theme. I was inspired by that instant in time after Jesus says Mary Magdalene’s name but before she realizes it is Him. I feel that she represents us all because we have heard Jesus’ name but we don’t yet fully realize what that means.

I was also inspired by a sculpture by artist Bruce Wolfe of the same encounter between Mary and Jesus. I used his Mary as my ‘model.’ I originally had Jesus in the painting but I removed Him because I wanted the focus to be on Mary.

It was unveiled December 11, 2016 during a concert at the Dallas Museum of Biblical Arts and dedicated on Easter Sunday, April 16, 2017, Pastor Rich Pounds officiating, at Central Lutheran Church in Dallas, where it now hangs in the narthex.

Jazz Angels

Sunday, December 11th, 2016

I actually thought I had posted this last Spring after the Lovers Lane Jazz Band performed at Central Lutheran Church but I couldn’t find it. Since they backed up our little choir for our Advent concert at the Dallas Museum of Biblical Arts it seemed appropriate to post it now. The concert was also a good opportunity for me to “unveil” a painting that will be on display at Central Lutheran Church. I’ll post an image of it later.

I was asked to come up with “angels playing jazz.” I did several sketches of musicians on a variety of instruments until I decided, OK, enough already. I’m, sorry if I left out your favorite instrument. I scanned the sketches into the computer and started working on the composition. With that done I did the “inking.” But something was wrong. I stared at the drawing for awhile until I realized a couple of musicians were missing. I knew I had drawn them. I couldn’t leave it as-is and searched for the missing musicians. Finally found the sketches between my desk and the wall! Back to the scanner. I had to completely redo the composition.
