Girl with Arm Raised

Found art. This is a really old one. I think I did this in college. It’s a tiny one. Only about 3 ½” high.

Scherzo Left Handed

Back when I was in the ER I had to sign my name a few dozen times – left handed! I pondered on the difficulties. Writing a loop for example. To write exactly the same way requires a completely opposite effort. Pulling the pen instead of pushing it. Writing in a mirror image creates a backward character. Hmmm….

I decided to attempt a drawing using only my left hand. I had to chose something that was pretty basic and a medium that was forgiving. I used chalk and charcoal. It was fun while at the same time tedious and frustrating. The first things I noticed were my light source was over the wrong shoulder and I kept wanting to draw on the wrong half of the paper. I also was amused that my left hand got tired quickly.

My source material was a sculpture by Harriet Frishmuth (1880-1980). I first noticed her work in a lovely statue “Playdays” at the Dallas Arboretum. This is not that. This is “Scherzo.”

I was watching an old movie on TV and noticed an actor I thought was really pretty so I looked her up on the internet. I came across a photo and thought it would be fun to draw. I was more interested in practicing than in doing a portrait so the likeness is a tad off. But here she is, Madge Evans. I think this pose fits in as well today as it did in the 1930s.

After I finished the charcoal drawing I wondered what it would look like if I used a smudge stick to smooth it out. So I decided to find out. As usual, there were plusses and minuses. Nice results in some areas, disappointments in others.

Two Deer By Tree

I just noticed this on my wall and realized I’d never posted it. So here it is. It was done for exercise only, just playing around. I was inspired by a photograph I saw somewhere and converted it to charcoal.

Young Gene

Back in the olden days I would often do my drawings sitting in the den with a drawing board on my lap. Just for the heckuvit I decided I would try that again. I chose to do a simple charcoal sketch. While it was fun I think I’ll stick to my easel in the studio.

Gene Tierney is the most beautiful woman in the history of cinema. And I say that with great respect to so many lovely ladies over the years. When I came across a photo of Ms Tierney without much make up I was committed to doing a drawing. Unfortunately, the drawing-board-in-the-lap-in-the-Lazy-Boy-in-the-den experiment didn’t do her justice. But I think her natural beauty still comes out.

I had been very unproductive and forced myself to draw something to keep my sanity. I hadn’t used chalk pastels in awhile so I decided to give that a shot.

In memory of someone who was too young to leave us. And to bring some peace to her family.

Baby Daughter

A long time ago I was practicing with charcoal (and a touch of chalk) and I came up with this drawing of my daughter when she was a baby. It was done on a piece of regular ol’ poster board. Over the decades of sitting in my flat file the white has turned quite yellow.
