Miriam

My commemoration to Miriam, Moses’ big sister. What a brave young woman! Her Mom puts Miriam’s 3-month old baby brother afloat in a river. Miriam stays to watch over him. The Pharaoh’s daughter discovers the baby and takes him in. Miriam is there to witness this. Miriam then has the chutzpah to approach the Pharaoh’ daughter and the gumption and shrewdness to suggest Moses’ Mom be hired to wean and care for the baby!

When the Israelites escape the Pharaoh’s army at the Red Sea it is Miriam who leads the celebration in dance and song. Not timid, Miriam is outspoken about Moses’ new “Cushitic” wife. Miriam becomes “leprous,” was confined outside the camp for seven days. The people did not move on until she was brought back. When the Israelite community arrived at the Desert of Zin, they stayed at Kadesh. There Miriam died and was buried.
