I was asked to do an illustration for an Advent concert. I tried to avoid the typical nativity scenes, and shepherds, and wise men and so on. (People tend to get confused about Advent and Epiphany and just lump them all together into “Christmas.”) I wanted to depict Mary during her pregnancy and the ordeal of their search for lodging. In some cultures this is observed as, “Las Posadas.”
Instead of the usual illustration I took a mosaic or stained glass approach.
