Young Loretta, Step by Step

Monday, June 24th, 2019

People have asked how I draw on an iPad. Here is a brief explanation:

Louise

Sunday, March 31st, 2019

This is Louise Brooks. She was an actress in the 1920s and 30s. A true “flapper girl.“ She helped popularize the bob hairstyle. Apparently, she was something of a hedonist. But I didn’t draw her because of all that. I just thought she was pretty.

King Etzel

Sunday, March 17th, 2019

This is a depiction of King Etzel from a beautiful sculpture (Nibelungen-Brunnen, “Nibelungen Fountain”) in Tulln, Austria by Michail Nogin of his meeting with Kriemhild. Etzel is my German family name and I claim him as my ancestor. That’s how I got the Sir Colby nickname. According to the Nibelungenlied (the Song of the Nibelungs), it was in Tulln that Etzel saw Kriemhild and proposed to her. The fountain was dedicated to this event in 2005.

Tina Cheerleader

Sunday, March 3rd, 2019

I don’t remember how the conversation started but it ended up being about Dallas Cowboys Cheerleader, Tina Hernandez, from the late 1970s, early 1980s. I mentioned that I had done a drawing of her but a search on my website revealed I had never posted it except in one of the banners. A photographer friend of mine had taken a photo of her on the field and gave it to me to draw. Tina moved on to Hollywood, became Tina Gayle, and starred in the TV series, “CHiPs.” Many years later here’s the drawing:

Lili Damita

Sunday, September 9th, 2018

Surfin’ the tube and came across an old movie, Captain Blood, starring Errol Flynn. He was one of my favorite actors so I looked him up on the internet. In that search I discovered Lili Damita, one of his three wives. Watched the movie with my iPad in my lap and started this sketch. I didn’t get through and after a slew of interruptions I finally finished it after several days.

Girl with Long Hair

Sunday, October 22nd, 2017

This was done on my iPad Pro using the “pencil” tool in Adobe Sketch. It is actually a detail of a larger drawing which includes nudity so I cropped that out.
